Davis Besse has been performing Shield Building Concrete mitigation for the past few years due to Laminar cracks discovered on the shield building.  Dose accumulated per individual is low level (gamma & neutron) and dose rates vary based on location where the excavating of concrete is being removed.



Work Scope includes scaffolding to work location, excavation of concrete, cleaning /replacing rebar and re-installing concrete to prevent any additional propagation of cracks.



The goal of this question will be to ask if there are any other Nuclear facilities performing similar

repairs ?  What innovative / creative tools or techniques are being used to reduce personnel exposure?





Current Dose Reduction Techniques Communicated / Implemented



*         Utilize only necessary personnel to perform work.

*         Minimize time in elevated dose work areas (Excavated concrete areas)

*         Maintain distance from the shield building as practical when not actively performing work (Excavated concrete areas).

*         Different concrete forms are being utilized that will reduce the effort and time to install and remove forms thereby reducing personnel exposure.

*         Multiple tooling has been used to remove concrete / clean rebar.

*         A crane has been installed on top of the shield building to increase efficiency for movement of material.
