In December 2020 Laser Abatement Services completed its first in-field source term Radiation reduction in a Nuclear Power Plant, reducing a Radiological Hot Spot Exposure from 298 mrem/hour to 1.2 mrem/hour.
The innovative laser abatement technology has the potential to reduce dose rates where normal decontamination efforts were unsuccessful. The LAS 1000-watt Laser is tunable. This LASER System uses HEPA filtration technology and reduces the amount of Rad Waste. It restores metal back to original condition without any potential surface damage and without introducing any chemicals or other debris and there is no post cleanup.
Implementation of this process could eliminate the need for Respiratory Protection for certain activities (i.e. Valve Body/Internal work) and minimize Highly Contaminated Equipment to acceptable contamination levels.
