We put swing gates at the entrance to High Rad Areas with a carabiner or something similar that requires a conscious effort to operate so people can't just blow through them without looking, and avoids the issue of blocking egress.

Hello all! Hope this finds you well.

At Cook, we currently administratively lock our high radiation area (in addition to our LHRAs). Due to the lack of positive locking mechanisms on our doors we use a large number of padlocks for both HRA and LHRAs and are trying to find alternatives for the use of padlocks. With that in mind, we would like to benchmark the following:

  1. Do you administratively lock or secure High Radiation Areas?
  2. If so, what mechanism do you use to secure them (positive locking doors, swing-gates, electronic key card/turn-style system, padlocks, etc.)
  3. Do you ever use padlocks to lock High Radiation Areas or Locked High Radiation Areas?
  4. If so, what mechanisms are in place to ensure all personnel have exited prior to installing the padlock?
  5. Have you installed any innovative technology for securing high radiation areas or locked high radiation area? If so, can you provide any literature, vendor names, etc. on the technology.

I look forward to your response.

Thank You!

Olga
