Do you administratively lock or secure High Radiation Areas? Yes
1. If so, what mechanism do you use to secure them (positive locking doors, swing-gates, electronic key card/turn-style system, padlocks, etc.) HRA gates have self-locking mechanism such as a pool gate. In cases where we do not have access to this type, we would secure using a carbiner
2. Do you ever use padlocks to lock High Radiation Areas or Locked High Radiation Areas? No for HRA's/ Yes, for LHRA's.
3. If so, what mechanisms are in place to ensure all personnel have exited prior to installing the padlock? Doors that do not freely allow egress, we use LHRAG and leave the door open during access and rely on LHRAG to verify everyone is out.
4. Have you installed any innovative technology for securing high radiation areas or locked high radiation area? If so, can you provide any literature, vendor names, etc. on the technology. No

1. Do you administratively lock or secure High Radiation Areas? Yes
2. If so, what mechanism do you use to secure them (positive locking doors, swing-gates, electronic key card/turn-style system, padlocks, etc.) All HRA have either a swing gate with either a carabiner like below, or locking mechanism. When a door is the boundary, we usually lock the room and control the key. Recently, we have purchased swing gates that latch and have alarms o them if the gate is open for > 30 seconds. They can be great, but they do not work for every situation and can create their own challenges, for instance, they are difficult to open if you are carrying items.
3. Do you ever use padlocks to lock High Radiation Areas or Locked High Radiation Areas? Yes, we have separate key series for HRA vs LHRA, and we can change the cores in our padlocks, and doors, based on the posting for the room. We installed hasps on most of the doors that are controlled with padlocks, but use chains on the doors without hasps.
4. If so, what mechanisms are in place to ensure all personnel have exited prior to installing the padlock? Doors that do not freely allow egress, we use LHRAG and leave the door open during access and rely on LHRAG to verify everyone is out.
5. Have you installed any innovative technology for securing high radiation areas or locked high radiation area? If so, can you provide any literature, vendor names, etc. on the technology. I will send the info on the latching swing gates, if I can find it.

EXTERNAL - STOP & THINK before opening links and attachments.
We put swing gates at the entrance to High Rad Areas with a carabiner or something similar that requires a conscious effort to operate so people can't just blow through them without looking, and avoids the issue of blocking egress.

Hello all! Hope this finds you well.
At Cook, we currently administratively lock our high radiation area (in addition to our LHRAs). Due to the lack of positive locking mechanisms on our doors we use a large number of padlocks for both HRA and LHRAs and are trying to find alternatives for the use of padlocks. With that in mind, we would like to benchmark the following:
1. Do you administratively lock or secure High Radiation Areas?
2. If so, what mechanism do you use to secure them (positive locking doors, swing-gates, electronic key card/turn-style system, padlocks, etc.)
3. Do you ever use padlocks to lock High Radiation Areas or Locked High Radiation Areas?
4. If so, what mechanisms are in place to ensure all personnel have exited prior to installing the padlock?
5. Have you installed any innovative technology for securing high radiation areas or locked high radiation area? If so, can you provide any literature, vendor names, etc. on the technology.
I look forward to your response.
Thank You!
Olga
