Salem is looking to determine how other sites are handling the following regarding disposal:
1. Do you accrue a specific amount of money each time a filter is changed out? yes
2. If so, what is that amount of money? Depends on what type of filter.
3. When you ship filters, do you send to processor and have shredded and them ship for burial? We send them to EnergySolutions for processing. Many of our filters are Class C so I assume they shred them and add solidification material for burial.
4. If not, how do you ship them? How do you classify for shipment? Lower activity filters ship as LSA-II in a 14-215H cask. Higher activity filters ship as Type B in a 10-160B cask. All filters are classified individually using RadMan
5. How do you ship tri-nuke filters? Do you take core samples? Do you use dose to curie for classification? How do you place into the liner? All of our filters are sampled for Part61 (for each filter type) by obtaining ashless smears on the outside of the filter. We use dose to curie on all filters. All filters are dropped into a PL 8-120 liner manually or from a transfer shield for higher activity filters.
6. Any other information that you have would be greatly appreciated.
